On painting

Today I helped Kelly to paint the hallway in her house.

At first, I didn’t know if I was going to do a good job. Painting a wall requires patience, an observant eye, and some dexterity.

The main goal is to paint an even surface without blank spots. To do so, you need to put the right amount of paint on the roller. Too much paint and the wall ends up littered with plasters. Too little, and the paint becomes uneven. You also need to roll the roller at the right speed. The right amount of pressure in the wall is also needed.

Finally, a detailed eye inspection is needed to make sure everything looks good.

The activity is quite relaxing. It provides a natural way to stay away from electronics. It focuses the mind on a specific task, and gives a sense of accomplishment at the end when those walls look all nicely painted!
